Newsletter October 2019

Dear friends,

As promised in our last letter, we are experiencing an eventful fall. The EMO Metalworking fair in Hannover was a great success with many fruitful discussions. We can also proudly announce that our cemented carbide Vibenite® 480 has been twice awarded. Further, our CTO has been appointed to the council of a new additive manufacturing program at Uppsala University, and will also give a lecture at Uppsala Technical Association. The growing interest in VBN’s products is leading us towards expansion, which we are all very excited about. Read on…

  • VBN’s CEO Dr. Martin Nilsson accepting the MM MaschinenMarkt innovation award

As an exhibitor at the recent EMO Metalworking fair in Hannover, VBN initiated interesting contacts with companies eager to experience the performance of Vibenite® materials. What is more, VBN’s cemented carbide Vibenite® 480 won the MM Maschinenmarkt innovation award for additive manufacturing. – A great honour at this leading fair with 2,100 exhibitors from 47 countries. This hybrid carbide was also recognised as one of the main product innovations on the EMO website. VBN’s components even covered all publicity material for the EMO additive manufacturing circle. -A great choice by the event organiser, we have to say! Below are some of the articles published in international media, related to VBN’s EMO appearance.

ETMM – Print while the powder is hot
Metal AM – VBN Components to showcase cemented carbide for metal AM at EMO Hannover
ETMM – And the award goes to VBN Components
Svensk Verkstad – Dunderstart för svenska VBN Components på EMO
MaschinenMarkt – Herausragende Innovationen ausgezeichnet
MaschinenMarkt – Hybridkarbid – der neue Werkstoff für die Additive Fertigung

TCT Awards 2019

At the end of September, the TCT Awards ceremony was held as the grand finale of the TCT Show, focused on additive manufacturing. Company and academia representatives from all over the world were gathered to celebrate the latest progress made in different areas of additive manufacturing. In the category of Materials – Non-polymers, VBN received the prize as highly commended for its cemented carbide Vibenite® 480.

Strong interest leading to expansion

VBN is experiencing a definite increase in both customer requests and general public interest. Collaboration has taken off with the license customer signed in December 2018 and new relations have been built since the EMO Hannover fair, which also gave a great boost to the company videos explaining hybrid carbide Vibenite® 480 and The world’s hardest steel, Vibenite® 290. Our two videos (short and long version) about Vibenite® 480 together have more than 1.700 unique views, and the one about Vibenite® 290 an astonishing 8.500 views! Our blooming business is leading us on the path of expansion and in a foreseeable future we will move to new facilities, employ new co-workers and acquire new production equipment.

CTO Dr. Ulrik Beste assigned to Uppsala University programme council

As a response to the increasing demand of skilled professionals in additive manufacturing, Uppsala University will introduce an international master programme focused on the subject, the first of its kind in Sweden. VBN’s Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Ulrik Beste, will be part of the programme council. As an alumnus of the University and still conducting research on-site, Dr. Beste gladly accepted the position. The programme is planned to be launched in 2020.

VBN’s CTO speaks at Uppsala Technical Association

Uppsala Technical Association (Tekniska Föreningen i Uppsala) has been arranging lectures and events since 1910. They are also to thank for the more recent establishment of a technical museum in the city’s old pump house. On November 25th VBN’s CTO Dr. Ulrik Beste will give the lecture “Next generation’s material production – 3D printing of wear resistant metals”, which will be held at the Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University, where Dr. Beste earned his degree.
